Solicitation Practicum - Training and practice
A successful fundraising program is not just about the money. Yet as development professionals we MUST talk about money. This half-day workshop will support nonprofit professionals in practicing the “art of the ask.” Together we will practice the skills involved in fundraising conversations. We’ll cover best practices about how to focus on the donor in your solicitations.
Through the training you will practice and gain comfort in direct and meaningful fundraising conversations by:
- Learning the “arc of the ask” as a model for structuring your fundraising conversations
- Developing specific strategies for several of your important donors
- Practicing your stewardship and solicitation conversations
- Receiving feedback in your practice conversations to improve your listening and asking skills.

About the Presenters
Jenn Hayslett is a creative development professional with 25 years of leadership experience as a community organizer, marketer, teacher, fundraiser, and coach, working with individuals and non-profits. Jenn’s deep non-profit experience includes management of annual funds, leading major gifts efforts, designing donor stewardship programs, heading capital campaigns, writing successful grants, and leading volunteers. As a coach and consultant, Jenn works with individuals and non-profits to help clarify and achieve goals to help them deliver their promise to the world.
Anne Peyton has worked in and with not-for-profits for more than 35 years. She has been a watch officer at Hurricane Island Outward Bound, a medical and academic librarian, and major gift officer at Dartmouth College.
The metaphor of Dorothy and fellow travelers on the yellow brick road in the Wizard of Oz tells the story of Anne’s philosophy of service, strengthening intuitive knowledge and expanding expertise within organizations to fulfill their promises to the world.
Since 1989, Yellow Brick Road™ has worked with a variety of social benefit, not-for-profits: conservation and the environment, youth, education (K-12 public, private and higher education), the arts, cultural organizations, museums, hospitals, health care, social service agencies, professional associations, and more. YBR focuses on board governance, organizational development, strategic planning, and fund raising, with facilitation and training as additional areas of expertise. A new grants management program offers services from one-time funding searches to full-scale grants management.
